Qantas, which began in Queensland in 1920 and celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, is the largest domestic and international airline in Australia.

According to AirlineRatings.com, which monitors 405 airlines across the globe, Qantas “has amassed an amazing record of firsts in operations and safety and is now accepted as the industry’s most experienced airline.”

What’s more the safety and product rating website said Qantas “has been a leader in the development of: Future Air Navigation System; the flight data recorder to monitor plane and later crew performance; automatic landings using Global Navigation Satellite System as well as precision approaches around mountains in cloud using RNP (required navigation performance).”

Additionally, Qantas has led with real-time monitoring of its engines across its fleet using satellite communications, which has enabled it to detect problems before they become a major safety issue, the website said.

The top 20 airlines were selected for being industry standouts, being at the forefront of safety, innovation and new aircraft launch.

Factors considered in the ranking were audits from aviation’s governing and industry bodies; government audits; airline crashes and serious incident record; profitability, safety initiatives and fleet age.

The other airlines making the cut listed alphabetically are Air New Zealand, Alaska Airlines, All Nippon Airways, American Airlines, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, Emirates, EVA Air, Finnair, Hawaiian Airlines, KLM, Lufthansa, Qantas, Qatar, Scandinavian Airline System, Singapore Airlines, Swiss, and United Airlines, and the Virgin group of airlines (Atlantic and Australia).

Qantas was previously named the world’s safest airline in 2014 to 2017 and again in 2018, when it shared top honours with 19 other airlines.
