More than 100 billion WhatsApp messages were sent on New Year’s Eve, according to the messaging platform.
The figure is the most messages ever sent in a single day, with more than a fifth of that number coming from the world’s second most populous country, India.
In addition to the 20 plus billion messages sent by Indians, Whatsapp also said 900 million were sent by Britons.

While WhatsApp was unable to say what the content was due to their end to end encryption which restricts that information to the sender and receiver, it said it can be assumed they were mostly ‘Happy New Year’ messages.
“As you know, people all around the world celebrated the turn of the decade with friends and family, but those of us who weren’t able to celebrate with loved ones in person turned to their phones to share New Year’s wishes,” it said.

What’s more, they said some 12 billion of the messages sent were images.
The company was able to achieve the milestone despite not being present in the most populous country, China, which has some 1.4 billion people.
