E-commerce giant Amazon announced yesterday reported “record-breaking” sales for this year’s holiday season as customers worldwide ordered billions of items and purchased tens of millions of Amazon Devices.

Amazon said the high sales figure was due to increasing deals and discounts it offered customers, including Deals of the Day, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Among the best-selling products and brands were: Echo Dot, Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote, Echo Show 5, iRobot Roomba 675 Robot Vacuum, and Champion items.

“This holiday season has been better than ever, thanks to our customers and employees all around the world.”

Toys, fashion, home and beauty were Amazon’s highest-grossing departments for the holiday season and accounted for more than half a billion total items ordered.

“This holiday season has been better than ever, thanks to our customers and employees all around the world,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder and CEO. “On behalf of all Amazonians, we wish everyone the happiest of holidays and a fantastic 2020.”

More jobs, increased sales of small businesses

The e-commerce powerhouse employed over 250,000 full- and part-time seasonal workers across its global customer fulfillment network, bumping up the company’s current employee register to 750,000 worldwide. Of that number, 90,000 work as Amazon Logistics associates across the US in the company’s delivery stations.

Small and medium-sized businesses also benefitted from the surge in sales, Amazon disclosed, with worldwide unit sales growing into double digits year-over-year and surpassing a billion items sold in Amazon’s Stores. In addition, the company boasted having 800 Amazon Delivery Service Partners which employ 75,000 drivers in the US.

“Hundreds of thousands of customers in the US visited the Small Business Gift Guide this holiday season, which featured gifts exclusively sold by small businesses,” Amazon stated in a release on its website.

The company noted, also, that more customers opted to use the Prime delivery service than in previous years.

“…in fact, in one week alone, more than 5 million new customers started Prime free trials or began paid memberships worldwide,” Amazon stated.

“This holiday season, the number of items that were delivered with Prime Free One-Day and Prime Free Same-Day Delivery nearly quadrupled compared to the same time period last holiday season, making this Amazon’s fastest holiday yet,” the e-commerce giant added.

With the Prime Free One-Day Delivery service, Amazon delivered more than 100 million items sold by independent third-party sellers, including small and medium-sized businesses.

In addition, Amazon-branded products were among the most popular items shipped with Prime Free One-Day Delivery across the US during the holidays.
