A suspected case of the coronavirus is being treated at the University Hospital of the West Indies.
Reports are the hospital has been partially shut down as the case is treated. The patient is said to have recently returned from China, where the disease was first identified.
An emergency meeting is now underway between the Ministry of Health and Wellness and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade according to a source at the Health Ministry.
An emergency press conference is scheduled for 12:30PM at the Ministry of Health location in New Kingston.
The Health Ministry had started a sensitisation process for key stakeholders to ensure optisemed readiness for the illness.
Symptoms of the coronavirus include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath, and breathing difficulties. More severe infections can cause pneumonia, kidney failure and even death.
The Ministry of Health and Wellness had started to sensitise key stakeholders as it sought to ensure optimised operational readiness for the novel coronavirus.
A release from the Ministry said travellers to Jamaica can also expect vigilant airport screening – from thermal scanning to data collection of appropriate travel history, signs and symptoms of respiratory illness, and any history of contact with a confirmed case or anyone having fever and respiratory symptoms.
